The group uses copies of Italian sixteenth century viols - Venetian type instruments made by Richard Jones for David Hatcher, and a ground-breaking new set of viols copied from Brescian originals, commissioned by Philip Thorby from maker Tim Soar.
The Brescian viols are exciting because they are newly commissioned, and are still being made. So far we have four: a treble in C, tenor in G, bass in D, and large bass in A. Here are some photographs:
Left: the tenor
Right: David with the A bass
The consort so far, with the (slightly ridiculous!) collection of bows we have been trying out with them.
